During letter time we practiced properly forming the capital/lowercase letters p, r, m, n, e, f and s. We also sang about each letter and practiced the sound it makes. This week marked the introduction of our first quick words. Throughout the course of the year we will practice 55 "quick words." We call them quick words because these are the words we want the kiddos to be able to read without sounding out. They are also the most common words used in our English language. The words this week were: I, see and a.
We wrapped up our patterning unit this week. The kids have done an awesome job with creating, extending and naming patterns. We have used a variety of medias to help us practice our patterning. Check in with your child and see what kind of pattern they can create for you!
The entire school learned about bullying this week as it was Bully Prevention Week. We learned about ways to deal with bullies, what a bully truly is, what to do if you see someone being bullied and how to help someone who is being bullied. Don't be surprised if you child feels he or she is being bullied at school this week. Usually right when we talk about his issue everyone feels like they have been bullied. Remember to ask your child if this is something that has happened several times? Does the child feel unsafe? Did the child tell anyone at school about the incident when it happened? Bullying is a very serious issue, but sometimes it can be difficult for our youngest learners to understand the difference between an argument and a bully.
To end Bully Prevention Week all of the kids decorated a wood chip from the playground. The wood chips were then thrown onto the playground in hopes they would help someone who is having a difficult day to feel better. The playground was also decorated by the entire school with positive sayings or drawings in chalk.
Just a reminder that next week is a short week. We will be walking to the fire hall on Wednesday morning at 8:45 and then school is done at 12:25. Also no school Thursday or Friday. Have a great weekend.
