We have continued to work each day to build our stamina during read to self. The kids were beyond excited that we made it 15 minutes one day! In addition to read to self, I introduced listen to reading and word work . During listen to reading, students use their iPads and headphones to listen to a story. The iPad also tracks the text and highlights it as it is read. This time of the day allows students to hear good fluent reading, track text and choose books of their interest. Word work was new this week as well. During this time students are in groups of 4-5 students. Each day they move to a new word work station. During this time they are manipulating words and working on multiple prereading skills. Once our stamina is built I will be working with small guided reading groups during this time as well.
Math has been all about patterns. We used shapes, colors, objects, iPads and our bodies to make various patterns. Our main pattern types include AB, ABB and ABC patterns. We ended the week by joining Mrs. Pollards class and working with a partner to create patterns.
During unit time we talked a lot about what we can do when we get mad. The book When Sophie Gets Really, Really Angry helped us to talk about warning signs and what we can do when we feel those signs. The class designated a spot behind my desk as our classroom "safe spot." This is a spot students can go if they need to calm down. We also practiced some calming techniques such as closing our eyes and counting to five, taking deep breaths, asking for help, taking a walk and asking for a break.
Next week we will begin learning about fire safety, continue saying and writing our letters and wrap up patterning. I hope everyone has a great weekend. As always please call or email if you have any questions.
